Help McDonald’s workers who’ve experienced sexual harassment on the job

Allegations of sexual harassment at fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s are rampant: up to 40% of women in the fast-food industry report facing unwanted remarks, looks, and inappropriate touching from coworkers. Even worse, McDonald’s has yet to adequately address the issue.

That’s where you come in. We’re canvassing McDonald’s stores across the country to get the word out about the resources available for workers who’ve experienced sexual harassment on the job — but we need your help.

Together, we will give workers tools to combat sexual harassment in the workplace, and the support they need.

Here’s how to help:

  • Sign up to join our call on Monday, September 24
  • Print out the informational cards for the Fight for $15’s free and confidential sexual harassment hotline (you’ll get those after the organizing call!)
  • Visit McDonald’s near you and distribute these cards to employees

Do:

  • Be prepared. Sign up to join our quick training call before you do any canvassing.
  • Be supportive and empathetic. Survivors can be under a lot of pressure to stay silent. If a worker tells you they’ve experienced sexual harassment on the job, let them know that you trust and support them 100%.
  • Refer them to our sexual harassment hotline. It’s free, completely confidential, and the best way someone who’s experienced sexual harassment on the job can get help.

Don’t:

  • Skip the call. This is on here twice because it’s so important! Workplace sexual harassment is an extremely sensitive topic, and you shouldn’t canvass without proper training.
  • Offer to help someone personally. If a worker tells you they’ve experienced sexual harassment, the best thing you can do is refer them to the hotline — any more involvement by anyone but a trained professional may do more harm than good.
  • Put yourself in harm’s way. If confronted directly while canvassing, make sure to disengage and leave.

Background:

For over two years, the Fight for $15 has stood with fast-food workers in challenging the rampant sexual harassment faced by fast-food workers on the job. Together, Fight for $15 and partners have helped fast-food workers speak out, get legal relief, and engage in direct action to create a safer, harassment-free workplace for all employees.

On September 18, McDonald’s workers are striking nationwide to protest the company’s treatment of workers who experience harassment. Employees have been retaliated against, or even terminated, for speaking out.
